Fairhaven School students compete at state Special Olympics

NILES — Several students from Trumbull County Fairhaven School in Niles took part at the state Special Olympics this month. The state swim meet was held Dec. 3 at The Ohio State University in Columbus with more than 550 athletes. The event proved successful for the Fairhaven athletes as the Fairhaven team competed in 15 events and medaled in nine. New Hope youth hold Saturday service NILES — The youth of New Hope United Methodist Church, 21 Fairview Ave., will offer a Christmas Eve service 7 p.m. Saturday, followed by a regular worship service 11 a.m. Sunday for Christmas. City contemplates plan for water towers

NILES — Two of the city’s water towers have rust inside, and the water department director is asking for permission to enter into a long-term maintenance agreement to keep up on the work. Records describing the maintenance of the city’s water towers is incomplete or missing, said Andy Catanzarite, the department head. Since he took the lead of the department about two years ago, Catanzarite said he has been looking for records and a solution to keep up on the towers without breaking the bank. Girard council says no change for Dollar General

GIRARD — City Council by a 7-0 vote Dec. 12 denied a zone change request for properties on Churchill Road that would have paved the way for a Dollar General. The city’s Planning Commission recommended the change from residential to commercial for five parcels of land at 520 and 542 Churchill Road for the discount store, but after hearing concerns from residents on traffic, stormwater and sewage runoff and appearance of the building, city council unanimously struck down the change. Water solutions to arrive in spring

NILES — Residents on Difford Drive will endure sediment-spiked water and swamped lawns at least until the spring. The dead-end waterline started causing problems for residents about a year ago, said Joe Lewis, 1326 Difford Drive. His neighborhood isn’t the only problem area in a city that has experienced a record number of water line breaks. Problems have sprung up for residents all over the city, including neighborhoods on Summerberry Lane, Carnegie Avenue, Nebraska Avenue and Morningside Drive.
