NILES -- Several students from Trumbull County Fairhaven School in Niles took part at the state Special Olympics this month.
The state swim meet was held Dec. 3 at The Ohio State University in Columbus with more than 550 athletes.
The event proved successful for the Fairhaven athletes as the Fairhaven team competed in 15 events and medaled in nine.
Participating from Fairhaven were: Melissa Baker, Paul Colla, Alicia Cunningham, Kathy Kinney, Robert Rickens, Joe Verostko, Julie Verostko and Marcus Wilson,
The Fairhaven team participated in 15 events, bringing home nine medals -- five gold, two silver and two bronze.
The results are:
l Melissa Baker -- fifth place, 50-meter freestyle; and sixth place, 50-meter backstroke;
l Paul Colla -- sixth place, 50-meter freestyle; and third place, 50-meter backstroke;
l Alicia Cunningham -- second place, 50-meter freestyle; and sixth place, 50-meter backstroke;
l Kathy Kinney -- first place, 50-meter freestyle; and first place, 25-meter butterfly;
l Robert Rickens -- first place, 50-meter freestyle; and second place, 50-meter backstroke;
l Joe Verostko -- third place, 50-meter freestyle; and fifth place, 50-meter backstroke;
l Julie Verostko -- first place, 50-meter freestyle; and first place, 25-meter freestyle; and
l Marcus Wilson -- fifth place, 25-meter freestyle.
