City building mold ‘minimal’

NILES — The new roof at City Hall is finished and the endeavor to repair the building is likely to come in under budget because the mold was not too widespread, Safety Service Director Jim DePasquale said. The crew removing the mold and the building material it was growing on found there was not a lot of hidden mold, which DePasquale said would have driven up costs. “It is excellent news. New police chief chosen

NILES — Acting police Chief Jaisan Holland will serve as the city’s next police chief. A chance for the two test takers to object to the results of the test was waived Dec. 6, and the Niles Civil Service Commission certified the results. At the commission’s meeting, Mayor Tom Scarnecchia announced the results, and a formal appointment was made at the Dec. 7 Niles City Council meeting. Capt. Mayor ‘confident’ his new plan will work

NILES — The mayor outlined funding Thursday for a five-year strategy to address the city’s capital needs as part of his amended fiscal recovery plan. Members of council at the roundtable expressed tentative approval of the changes, but also expressed concern over funding for the administration’s proposals. Among the proposals was adding a labor pool of about five new employees that could work where needed in the city and whose pay would be distributed between the departments they worked in from day to day.
