New Hope youth hold Saturday service
NILES -- The youth of New Hope United Methodist Church, 21 Fairview Ave., will offer a Christmas Eve service 7 p.m. Saturday, followed by a regular worship service 11 a.m. Sunday for Christmas.
The church's New Year's Eve open communion will be held 6 to 7 p.m. Dec. 31. The sanctuary will be open during this hour for personal communion and reflection.

Historic scenes featured in calendar
NILES -- Calendars featuring historical photographs from the city's earliest days are for sale through the Niles Historical Society for $10.
The society plans to annually release the calendars to raise money. The 2017 calendar is on sale and has photos from the late 19th century and the early 20th century, including images of the old fire station and the 1913 flood.
The calendars can be purchased during open houses 2 to 5 p.m. the first Sunday of the month at the Ward-Thomas Museum, 503 Brown St., or by calling Sandy Bilovesky at 330-652-8329.
MVSD gets loan for distribution system
WEATHERSFIELD -- The Mahoning Valley Sanitary District received a $6.3 million low-interest loan from the state to help replace distribution valves and transmission lines.
Construction of the improvements is expected to be completed by mid-2018, according to a release from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. MVSD is a public water system that serves Youngstown, Niles and McDonald.
The reduced interest rate on the $6.3 million loan will save it about $1.2 million.
Niles PD policies are certified
NILES -- The policies the Niles Police Department uses to guide its hiring and use-of-force practices have received provisional certification through the Ohio Collaborative Community-Police Advisory Board, according to the Ohio Department of Public safety.
Police Chief Jay Holland said the department's use-of-force policies were already acceptable and the policy guiding hiring was amended to fit with the board's standards.
One of the goals for the hiring policy was to ensure there was adequate minority recruitment in departments, he said.
The board was created by the state to improve the relationships between police departments and the community.
