Historical society to meet

NILES — The Niles Historical Society will met 10 a.m. Jan. 14 in the meeting room at Ward-Thomas Museum, 503 Brown St. The monthly open house has been rescheduled from New Year’s Day to 2 to 5 p.m. Jan. 8. The society is selling calendars featuring historical photographs from the city’s earliest days. The 2017 calendar will be available at the open house or by calling Sandy Bilovesky at 330-652-8329. The first of six historical banners also will be on display. The first banner is about the Ward-Thomas family.

Women of Moose offer help

NILES — Members of the Women of the Moose Niles Chapter 113 lended helping hands to Homes for Kids Inc. / Child and Family Solutions, which held its annual Christmas party for children Dec. 15 at Ciminero’s Banquet Centre. Center readies sample lease

NILES — A draft of a lease for the wellness center was distributed Monday to the Niles Park Board, the entity that will directly supervise the tenants the city is hoping to woo into the building. Council is expected to vote today on whether the safety service director should advertise for bids to lease the building. The bids would have to be advertised for five weeks and the winning bid would have to be approved by council and the park board. Niles council passes fifth recovery plan

NILES — City Council on Friday unanimously approved the addition of 12 points to the fiscal recovery plan, which required the tightening of department budgets across the board. “I think this is a good plan that keeps the safety and wellness of the Niles and its residents in mind,” Mayor Tom Scarnecchia said. “We took a bite out of everything.
