Scholarship helps music students

NILES — Parents of a senior Niles McKinley High School band or choir member will receive in the mail a letter and application for the William D. Bauman Memorial Music Scholarship. The $5,000 scholarship was established in the memory of William D. Bauman, a 1947 Niles graduate. Bauman grew up on the south side of Niles and was active in the school band as well as the Warren Junior Military Band. He believed students should further their education after graduation. NILES — President William McKinley was born in a little house in Niles 174 years ago and in a replica of the home, people gathered Saturday to learn about him and his political beliefs. While McKinley only lived in Niles until the age of 9, long before becoming the last veteran of the Civil War to serve as president, his “front porch” approach to campaigning and promises of full dinner pails were formed in Ohio’s northeast. Niles revising retire-rehire policy in place

NILES — The city’s previous administration made special salary and benefit deals with some of the people that were rehired after retiring and now the city is instituting a policy to make sure it doesn’t happen again, the president of council said.
