WHAT: City Council meeting Feb. 1

PRESENT: Robert Marino, Michael Lastic, Stephen Papalas, Ryan McNaughton, Barry Steffey Jr., Linda Marchese, Steven Mientkiewicz, Frank Pezzano and Mayor Thomas Scarnecchia

Council:

l Adopted an ordinance raising the pay rate of the water and sewer superintendent by $4,000 a year to $82,000 a year;

l Asked the Niles Planning Commission to examine a proposed ordinance to vacate a portion of South Broadway Avenue to the Niles Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses;

l Adopted an anti-harassment and hiring policy;

l Adopted a resolution outling which city employees can take their work vehicles home with them -- the water and sewer superintendent, water foreman, sewer foreman, mechanic, light superintendent, assistant light superintendent, the light foreman and the assistant light foreman. The fire and police departments operate under a different policy;

l Authorized the Ohio Department of Transportation to replace guardrails on state Route 46 at no cost to the city;

l Gave the police chief permission to use $12,500 of $16,692 of confiscated cash that a judge ruled should be turned over to the department, to buy a used vehicle for the department;

l Updated the authorized work force ordinance to reflect which non-union city employees can receive overtime payment;

l Gave first reading to an ordinance that would raise the pay of the police chief's part-time secretary from $9.60 an hour to $11.50 an hour.

WHAT: Village Council meeting Feb. 1

PRESENT: Brian Fisher, Ray Lewis, Richard Harvey, Scott Seitz,Michael O'Brien and Brian Klase

Council:

l Approved making the fiscal officer position full-time effective Jan. 1 because of the workload in the finance office. Robin DeBow was working part-time;

l Reported Marty Puckett, who was named acting mayor following Glenn Holmes leaving last year for a state representative position, has filed with the Board of Elections to fill the remainder of the term. Puckett's council seat was filled by former councilman Brian Fisher.
