Youngstown woman charged in Liberty stabbing case
LIBERTY — A Youngstown woman accused of stabbing her boyfriend is set to return to court June 17 on her charges.
Takayla James, 24, faces charges of felonious assault and domestic violence in Girard Municipal Court.
According to a police report, Liberty officers were dispatched to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after a man arrived at the emergency room with a stab wound to his lower left torso earlier this month. The report states the incident occurred at a Roosevelt Drive residence, according to the man, who said a verbal argument had escalated over whether to give their newborn baby a bath.
While on the phone with his mother, the man said James approached him and slapped him in the face. He admitted to retaliating by slapping James back with an open hand, noting that he was holding the newborn infant at the time, the report states.
The man attempted to leave the residence when he heard James’ sister yell “No!”, then felt an impact to his torso and turned around to see James holding a knife, which he described as having a pink handle and a “see-through rainbow” blade.
The man noted the infant was being held just inches away from where the blade struck, the report states.
James’ sister intervened to take the child to safety, at which point the man claimed James attempted to stab him a second time, but he disarmed her, throwing the knife into the kitchen and flinging several household objects, including a gallon jug of water, at her before fleeing the scene in her vehicle, the report states. He drove to a relative’s house on Delaware Avenue and an aunt transported him to the hospital.
The man’s mother told officers she was on the phone with the man during the altercation and heard him scream, “You stabbed me” before the phone was dropped.
Medical staff treated the man’s wound with several stitches and performed several tests to ensure his colon had not been pierced, according to the report, and officers seized the man’s blood-stained clothing, noting a visible slice in his sweatshirt consistent with a knife cut.
The report states officers went to the Roosevelt Drive residence, where officers saw visible blood droplets near the front door.
James’ sister granted written consent for a search of the home, where officers located a knife matching the man’s description in a kitchen display block.
The report states James’ sister told officers she witnessed the man hit James while holding the baby. After moving the child to a bedroom, she returned to find the man pinning James on a couch while holding the knife, though she confirmed hearing the man yell that he had been stabbed.
Authorities also checked a residence on Euclid Boulevard, but were unable to locate James and had temporary warrants issued for her.
James later made an appearance in Girard Municipal Court, where she pleaded not guilty to a domestic violence charge and was released on bond, court records show.
