McDonald council seeks new member
McDONALD — Village councilman Don Smith, who has served as chairman of the finance and levy committees, will step down at the end of July because he and his family are moving to Florida.
Members of council thanked Smith for his service and plan to seek applicants to fill the seat.
Mayor Ray Lewis said Smith has been a dedicated member of the community.
He announced that Smith and his wife, Laurie, their son Christian and Laurie’s mother, Virginia Evans, were named the grand marshals for next week’s summer homecoming festival with the parade at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Laurie Smith is a retired McDonald High School teacher. Christian Smith is a McDonald graduate where he excelled in athletics such as track, and Evans was a longtime village office manager.
“Don has served this village for many years. At one time he was the treasurer. He served with RITA and then because he loves this village so much came back to serve on council. During my 13 years on council and as mayor, Don has been the best financial adviser we have ever had on council,” Lewis said.
Council President Sean Schmidt said he received a resignation letter from Smith in which he says he enjoyed serving the village.
Smith said he and his wife will move to Florida to be closer to family. The Smiths have lived in McDonald for 26 years.
Smith said he wants council to have the time to find someone to fill the remainder of his term.
“Thank you for the trust you have placed in me and the opportunity to serve this village,” Smith said.
Schmidt said letters of interest can be sent to the village administration building through July 10.
Smith will attend his last regular meeting July 15.
