New grocery store to replace old Four Seasons Car Wash

Tribune Chronicle / R. Michael Semple Rick Uhl with Woodford Excavating of Braceville walks back to his excavator as demolition continues on the former Four Seasons Car Wash along Elm Road in Bazetta where construction of a new ALDI store is scheduled to begin June 23.

BAZETTA — If you’re an avid ALDI shopper, you might want to stockpile those quarters.

A new ALDI store will soon start taking shape at 2120 Elm Road NE in Bazetta — the longtime location of the former Four Seasons Car Wash near Walmart Super Center.

Ted Webb, township trustee, said he expects the discount food market will be a good fit for the community.

“I think it’s a pretty popular store and residents will like having it here,” Webb said.

The township gave the go-ahead for the project to proceed earlier this year, approving the necessary zoning and demolition permits.

Crews from Woodford Excavating of Braceville worked last week to raze the old building and prepare the site for the new store scheduled to open by the end of the year. Woodford owner John Woodford said his team will start excavating and working on the underground utilities this week.

Deerfield Construction of Cincinnati is on tap to build the new structure. Construction is scheduled to begin June 23.

ALDI Inc. focuses on private-label products that sell for low prices at its more than 1,600 stores across the country.

The Germany-based company is known for its slogan, “Lend us a quarter, and we’ll lend you a cart.” The shopper puts a quarter in the cart, but get its back when the cart is returned. Customers also pack their own groceries, a move company leaders have said keeps lines moving and cuts down on the customer’s shopping bill.

Company leaders said ALDI serves more than 40 million customers each month, a nearly 60 percent increase since 2013.

Earlier this year, the chain announced plans to remodel its existing stores and open 650 new locations across the country, bringing its total to nearly 2,000 by the end of 2018. The plan calls for the company to invest more than $3 billion to pay for land, facilities and equipment to open its new stores.

The Bazetta addition will bring the number of ALDI stores in Trumbull County to four. The others are on Parkman Road NW in Warren, Niles Cortland Road SE in Howland and 3497 Belmont Ave. in Liberty. Mahoning County has two — on Mahoning Avenue in Austintown and on South Avenue in Boardman.

Two years ago, ALDI purchased Bottom Dollar Food’s 66 stores, including several in the Mahoning Valley, and its leased liabilities from Delhaize Group for $15 million.

However, ALDI did not move into any of the local former Bottom Dollar sites, including the Warren location that opened in July 2013 in a newly constructed 18,000-square-foot building at the corner of state Route 422 and North Road that became home to Harbor Freight Tools in 2016.

In April, Famous Supply moved into the former Bottom Dollar store on Midlothian Boulevard in Youngstown.

In March, plans were announced to turn the 18,000 square foot building on Glenwood Avenue that was once a Bottom Dollar into a new One Health Ohio community clinic.

In April 2015, ALDI donated the former Bottom Dollar on Glenwood Avenue in Youngstown to the city.

Last week, an ALDI spokesperson said other than the Bazetta store, the company has no immediate plans to open another location in the Warren area.
