Plant and Pest Clinic
You can submit your questions by calling the office at 330-533-5538 or emailing us at mahoningclinic@osu.edu. Please attach photos and add any information that would help research your plant and pest questions. The clinic is open April through October, Monday and Thursday 9 a.m. to noon. Walk-ins are welcome.
2026 Spring Garden Workshop
What: Designed to inspire and educate, the workshop features two keynote presentations, a variety of hands-on and informational breakout sessions, door prizes, and opportunities to connect with local gardening experts and Master Gardener Volunteers. Topics range from plant selection and soil health to sustainable landscaping practices and garden art. The morning keynote, “Easy Perennials and Annuals to Add Color to Your Landscape,” will be presented by Pam Bennett, Extension Educator and Master Gardener Volunteer Program Director. The afternoon keynote, “Top Trees and Shrubs for Northeast Ohio,” will be led by Paul Snyder, Operations Manager at Secrest Arboretum, highlighting resilient and regionally adapted woody plants.
Attendees will select three breakout sessions from options including growing plants from seed, rain gardens, soil health, succulents, pruning basics, creating wildlife-friendly spaces, and creative garden art projects. A hot lunch, educational handouts, session proceedings, and an optional make-and-take item are included with registration.
When: 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday

Cost: $45, which includes all sessions and materials. Advance registration is required and space is limited.

Garden Art Series: Fairy Garden
What: This is a whimsical, family-friendly event where attendees can design miniature garden landscapes using plants, natural materials and tiny decorative elements. Fairy gardens are perfect for patios, porches or indoor displays. This workshop is ideal for both kids and adults looking to explore creativity while connecting with nature.
When: 6:30 p.m. April 29

Speaker Series: Stir-Fry Garden
What: In partnership with Flying HIGH, Inc., this series offered by the OSU Extension Office is designed to educate community members on gardening techniques and food preparation using homegrown ingredients. It will provide participants with hands-on learning opportunities focused on growing, maintaining and utilizing garden produce. Attendees also will have the opportunity to sample simple dishes prepared with ingredients highlighted in each session.
When: 5:30 to 7 p.m. April 30
Where: 100 Broadway Ave., Youngstown.
Cost: Free, but advanced registration is required. Participants are encouraged to dress for outdoor conditions, as sessions will be held rain or shine. Seating will be provided. In the event of severe weather, cancellations will be announced by 10 a.m. on the Mahoning County Extension Facebook page.

Morning with the Masters: Bluebirds
What: Learn to recognize their nests, eggs and habits, along with information on building your own bluebird house. In addition, other birds will nest in these boxes, but not all are welcome.

Series: Garden Party Coasters
What: Join us to create a set of four coasters themed with your choice of flowers, birds, plants or other nature scenes.
