Security officer’s attitude was abysmal

DEAR EDITOR:

“Share everything … play fair … don’t hit people … say you are sorry when you hurt somebody … when you go out into the world, watch for traffic, hold hands, and stick together.” These are just some of the wise nuggets written by Robert Fulghum in his classic 1986 book, “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.” The gems in this essay lay the foundation of mutual respect, courtesy, positive social interaction with others, to name a few.

This past week, I had to get a car title. I wasn’t sure which building I needed, so I entered the Trumbull County Administrative Building. Upon entering, I said “Good Morning!” to the officer seated at security. His response was, “Everything out of your pockets and into the basket!” My reply was a question, ” Is this where the Title Office is located?” He responded, “No, this is where you empty your pockets as you were instructed.”

I then asked, “Is this the building where the Title Office is located?” He replied, “You didn’t say building … it’s down the hall.” I emptied my pockets and went through security appalled at the salutation I was given by a public servant — an officer of the law who my tax dollars pay for. I worked almost 40 years as a public servant — a teacher. I have had the privilege of working with hundreds of young people and never would allow such a condescending attitude toward others!

When a civilization loses civility, it dies!

Sir, if you are reading this, one’s super power is in the heart, not a badge!
