Railroad merger good for America and vets

DEAR EDITOR:

As an Army Veteran and Commander of my local American Legion post, I strongly support the Norfolk Southern-Union Pacific merger because it represents more than just a business deal — it’s an opportunity to strengthen America’s infrastructure, expand good jobs for veterans and make our transportation system safer for every family. That commitment to veterans is nothing new: in 2015, nearly one in five freight railroad employees had served in the U.S. military, a testament to how the railroad industry values our nation’s veterans.

I’ve seen countless men and women struggle to find meaningful work after their service. Railroads have long provided a pathway for veterans to put their leadership, discipline and technical training to use in civilian life. This merger would expand those opportunities at a time when they are needed most.

Just as importantly, railroads play a critical role when it comes to supplying communities with the basics — especially when supply chains are strained or under threat. Our highways are already overcrowded with trucks, creating real safety risks. In 2023 alone, there were over 40,000 highway fatalities, while railroads caused fewer than 1,000. One intermodal train can replace 550 trucks, a clear step toward safer roads for every family, including my own neighbors here at home.

From my time in service, I know how much stronger two forces become when they unite and share intelligence, resources and technology. Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific already invest heavily in advanced monitoring technology such as track sensors, predictive analytics and drones for track inspection. Together, they could share data, identify risks and respond faster — making the entire rail system safer and more efficient.

This merger is not just about corporate growth; it’s about creating safer transportation, expanding veteran job opportunities, and efficiently getting communities the goods they need. As both a veteran and a community leader, I urge regulators to support the proposed merger between Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific. It’s an investment in our veterans, in public safety and, most importantly, America’s future.
