Virginia M. Stein 1932-2025

CORTLAND — Virginia “Ginny” M. Spencer Stein, 93, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2025, with family by her side.

She was born May 11, 1932, in Bazetta Township, to Reed and Hazel Karr Spencer. Virginia graduated in 1950 from high school in Cortland.

She married Frank J. Stein Jr., the love of her life, Nov. 4, 1950; they enjoyed almost 63 years of marriage until his passing in 2013. Virginia showed her love for Frank as she cared for him at home for over 10 years during the progression of his Alzheimer’s disease.

Virginia was a member of the Howland Community Church since 1950, where she served as a deaconess and was a member of the Women’s Fellowship Group. She belonged to various civic organizations and truly enjoyed her eight years as a Girl Scout leader and many years working at the election polls in Howland. Virginia and Frank enjoyed golfing and traveling.

Virginia is survived by two daughters, Susan and Kathy; two grandsons, Jeremiah (Lorie) and Chad (Kathryn); two great-grandchildren, Westin and Emery; many nieces and nephews, including Jeff and Helen, who helped watch over her; and her bonus family, Amy, Carrie, Jeff and their families.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Fred, Bob, Ben, Richard and Gordon; sisters, Helen and Marlene; great-nephew, Matthew; son-in-law, Steve; and niece, Glenna.

Virginia’s family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the amazing and dedicated group of nurses and aides who cared for her at Shepherd of the Valley-Howland for five years.

Throughout her life, in good times and bad, Virginia maintained her sense of humor, love of ice cream and, as some would call it, her feistiness. She is missed but will always be in our hearts.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025, at Howland Community Church, with visitation 4 to 5 p.m.

The family is in the care of Lane Funeral Home, Roberts-Clark Chapel. Online condolences can be made at www.lanefuneralhomes.com.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Children’s Rehabilitation Center, 885 Howland Wilson Road NE, Warren, OH 44484; or Howland Community Church, 198 Niles Cortland Road SE, Warren, OH 44484.
