New committee gets accounting lesson

NILES — A new public committee that will monitor the city’s progress through financial recovery convened Dec. 6 for a lesson on how its budgets work and where problems, old and new, stand. In the first meeting, the city’s state-appointed fiscal supervisors walked members through the process of government fund accounting, detailed how the city found itself in fiscal emergency more than two years ago, outlined the problems its had getting out of that designation and spoke about what needs to happen before it can shed the label. GIRARD — Area fifth- to eighth-graders had the opportunity to showcase their robotics skills as they competed Dec. 4 at the FIRST Lego League regional tournament. The event, which was held at Girard High School, was one of two local regional qualifying events, with another regional tournament held Dec 10 at Warren G. Harding High School. McKinley Christmas showcases historic buildings

NILES — The fourth annual A McKinley Christmas will be noon to 4 p.m. Saturday with holiday activities for people of all ages planned at three historic buildings in downtown Niles.
