New Hope hosts special communion
NILES -- The youth of New Hope United Methodist Church, 21 Fairview Ave., will offer a New Year's Eve open communion 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday.
The sanctuary will be open during this hour for personal communion and reflection.

SCOPE plans January activities
The Niles SCOPE Senior Center, 14 E. State St., Niles, is planning a trip to Covelli Centre for a Youngstown Phantoms hockey game 1 p.m. Jan. 16.
The bus will leave noon from Niles, and the cost is $25 per person.
Grandchildren are welcome to come with their grandparents, and the deadline to register is Jan. 6.
Payment is required with reservation, which can be made by calling 330-544-3676.
The center also will offer several opportunities for health screenings.
Foot care with Tom Prokabla will be 9 a.m. to noon by appointment Jan. 6. Regular copays apply, and patients must bring an insurance card and make an appointment.

Weathersfield police policies certified
WEATHERSFIELD -- The policies the Weathersfield Police Department uses to guide its hiring and use-of-force practices have received provisional ceritifation through the Ohio Collaborative Community-Police Advisory Board, according to the Ohio Department of Public Safety.
The board's standards were defined in 2015, and the state's law enforcement departments have until February to have their policies certified to be included in a list that will be published statewide in March.
The board was created by the state to improve the relationships between police departments and the community.
