Mineral Ridge Historical Society markers arrive

MINERAL RIDGE — The Mineral Ridge Historical Society has received two Ohio Historical Society markers to be erected in the township. Marcy Buchanan of the society said the markers arrived late last year and will be installed in the spring at two locations. One marker is about Salt Springs and the Western Reserve and will be placed in Kerr Cemetery off Salt Springs Road. Two exhibitions opened Friday at the Art Outreach Gallery. McDonald center to mark one year

McDONALD — The McDonald Senior Center will mark its first-year anniversary in February. The center, which is located at 500 Ohio Ave., next to the post office, is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday, offering a variety of programs and services to people of all ages, but mainly local senior citizens. Center director Millie Ritz said activities include a literary book club, exercise programs three days a week, health screenings, bingo, crafts, potlucks, movies, games and day trips. Niles ends year with carryover

NILES — The city’s general fund ended 2017 with a $300,000 carryover, which was a result of higher than estimated tax revenue and several other factors, the auditor said. There was concern last year the general fund could end with a deficit or a zero balance. “I don’t want anyone to be surprised by that number, but there are a number of things that took place there,” Auditor Giovanne Merlo said.
