Niles to get new bank, hoping to save money

NILES — The city paid more than $180,000 in bank service charges in 2016 and officials are in the process of switching banks in the hopes of saving some money. In 2015, the city paid a little more than $73,000 in service charges, according to data provided by the city’s fiscal supervisors. The city’s payroll account has been transferred from PNC Bank to Farmers National Bank, Treasurer Janet Rizer-Jones said. Five join fire ranks in Niles

NILES — Five new firefighters have joined the ranks of the Niles Fire Department, with their salaries paid with a grant set to expire at the end of 2018. The newest additions are Justin Ross of Howland, Adam Kashien of Niles, Abigail Cline of Warren, Ryan Fowler of Chesterland and Thomas Cantola of Niles. Officer recognized for saving woman from fire

NILES — A Niles police officer was recognized Feb. 1 for what the mayor described as “heroic actions” when he helped a woman out of a burning apartment a couple of weeks ago. Patrolman Kevin Helmick was praised by Mayor Tom Scarnecchia, members of council, police Chief Jay Holland and with a standing ovation from the public for helping a woman out of her Arlington Arms apartment on Robbins Avenue after it caught fire.
