Seeking ‘Letters to Home’

ODNR to feature military correspondence in shrine

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, as part of America 250-Ohio has created the “Letters to Home Trail” near the Mohican Memorial Shrine, which honors nearly 20,000 Ohioans who died in conflicts from World War II to today.

The trail will feature a series of interpretive signs sharing the actual words written home to families of Ohio service members during times of conflict.

Project organizers are particularly seeking to ensure strong representation from the Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, Afghanistan War and Iraq War, and are reaching out to veterans and their families for more letters.

ODNR officials said these do not have to be traditional handwritten letters; it also accepts emails, voicemails and text messages.

Here are submission details:

• Excerpts or images of communication home. Submissions must include the service member’s name and rank, branch of service, unit/battalion designation and Ohio hometown.

• Families can fill out the online submission form directly on the ODNR website at ohiodnr.gov under the Letters to Home tab.

• Submissions are being accepted through Aug. 10.

Any questions regarding the form or project can be directed to Michael.Veres@dnr.ohio.gov.

The “Letters to Home Trail” is scheduled to be dedicated to the public in November for Veterans Day, which is Nov. 11.

“It will serve as a space for reflection, giving future generations a direct window into the thoughts and feelings of those who served in America’s wars and conflicts,” the ODNR states on his website.

Starting at $3.85/week.
