Dedication set for Kinsman greenspace

KINSMAN — After several years of work at the greenspace area located northeast of the township center, trustees plan to have a dedication ceremony and community gathering to celebrate.

Township trustees will dedicate the greenspace area at 4 p.m. May 23, with community activities until 6 p.m.

The greenspace was the location of the former Joseph Badger High School, but after the school was taken down, the area has been used as a small park for various events such as an annual summer car show held each July.

Trustee Chairman Greg Leonhard said the township has been able to secure grants and donations for improvements to the greenspace, which has included adding sidewalks, trees, lighting, benches and restrooms.

He said the total cost is between $250,000 to $300,000, with the sidewalk installation accounting for most of the cost.

The sidewalks will establish a walking path in the greenspace located in the area behind the Kinsman Public Library

Leonhard said no taxpayer dollars were used for the enhancements.

In 2024, the township received $159,460 in American Rescue Plan money from the Trumbull County Commissioners for the sidewalks.

He said the next project at the greenspace is to redo the tennis courts to make all-purpose playing areas for pickleball, tennis and basketball.

Leonhard said County Commissioner Denny Malloy, who was among the commissioners who helped secure funding for sidewalk projects in Kinsman, will be among the speakers at the dedication event.

Last year, nearly two dozen sponsored benches were put up along the walking path and lamp posts were installed.

The Kinsman Township Parks Committee spearheaded the effort and provided donations for many of the greenspace additions and improvements.

Trustees have discussed having a policy in place on the use of the greenspace grounds for community events.

In other business at this week’s trustee meeting, officials said the next phase of the sidewalk project will include the corner of Kinsman Nickerson Road and the township square.

Trustees said the project is covered by grant money, which will save the township between $30,000 and $40,000.

Starting at $3.23/week.
