Bazetta trustees OK 180-day moratorium on data centers
BAZETTA — As of now, no companies have come forward asking for permission to build data centers in the township, but trustees and other officials want to make sure regulation is in place before that happens.
On Tuesday, township trustees approved a 180-day moratorium on any development related to data centers.
“This is just to get ahead of the development,” said trustee Mike Hovis.
The township zoning commission has been discussing data center zoning requirements over its past few meetings, with zoning officials giving updates on the discussions to township trustees each month.
“We want to make sure we have proper legislation in place for when a company does want to come in,” Hovis said.
Zoning commissioners met Wednesday. Deanna Longo, who is chair of the commission, said the moratorium will give the commission time to get regulations for data centers written into the township code.
“We just don’t have it in there currently,” she said.
In other business, trustees:
• Set a public hearing at 6 p.m. May 26 to listen to citizen comments for and against the proposed zone change for a parcel along state Route 5, where lot owners are hoping to build flex-commercial space.
• Approved the purchase of six new tires for the township fire department’s ladder truck at a cost of $4,032.02. A three-year maintenance contract for fire department equipment also was approved at a cost of $40,075.20.
