Woman pleads guilty in fatal 2024 OVI crash
WARREN — A 36-year-old woman pleaded guilty Monday to charges stemming from a deadly 2024 crash that claimed the life of a 31-year-old Cortland man, according to court records.
Britni Ulam, of Ohio Avenue, Warren, appeared before Judge Cynthia Westcott Rice in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court, where she entered her guilty plea to aggravated vehicular homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence.
Ulam had been indicted on those charges in 2024 following the incident.
The crash occurred just before 2 a.m. on Oct. 29, 2024, when Ulam and the victim, Frank Walter, were traveling in a 2006 Nissan XTerra SUV, according to a report from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The vehicle veered off the road, struck a culvert, overturned, crossed back over the road and then went down an embankment. Neither Ulam nor Walter were wearing a seatbelt, and both were ejected from the SUV, sustaining serious injuries.
Investigators determined that alcohol and excessive speed were contributing factors in the initial crash. According to reports, Ulam’s blood-alcohol level was more than four times the legal limit in Ohio.
As emergency responders were en route, a southbound 2014 Nissan Altima driven by another Niles woman struck Walter, who was lying in the road, resulting in his death.
Ulam could face a maximum five-year prison term and a mandatory three-year driver’s license suspension after she submits to a background investigation prior to sentencing.
