Niles stabbing suspect held on $1 million bond

NILES — A Warren man accused of stabbing another man during an argument near a bus stop remained jailed Thursday on $1 million bond after his arraignment on charges of attempted murder and felonious assault.

Kenyon Kellum, 52, of Southern Boulevard in Warren, pleaded not guilty during a hearing in Niles Municipal Court before Judge Christopher Shaker.

Kellum was designated a repeated violent offender due to a complicity to felonious assault from 1992. He is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing in Niles Municipal Court next week.

He was arrested Wednesday afternoon following a stabbing at Gentry Plaza near the intersection of U.S. Route 422 and state Route 46 in Niles.

The victim, a 37-year-old man who identified himself only as John before losing consciousness, remained unidentified and in critical condition Thursday at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, Niles police said. He underwent surgery after being stabbed in the neck and chest area and has not regained consciousness, according to a police report Thursday.

The report provided new details on the incident, which stemmed from a verbal dispute that escalated near Wingstop and Subway restaurants.

Officers responded around 3 p.m. Wednesday and found the victim unresponsive on the west side of the plaza near Morgan Furniture, with Niles Fire Department and EMT personnel treating him as a trauma patient.

Two witnesses provided statements and shared surveillance footage showing the victim arguing with a man and woman. The footage showed the woman handing a knife to the man, who then stabbed the victim in the left side of his chest and neck, according to the report.

The suspects, described as a black man in a tan jacket and black hat, and a black woman in a white jacket and white pants, fled eastbound on Youngstown Warren Road. Using city CONDOR cameras, officers tracked them to the nearby Days Inn, where management confirmed a matching couple had checked into Room 223.

Police made contact at the room, where the woman answered the door and confirmed a man was inside. Both were detained and read their Miranda rights. They were transported to Niles police headquarters for questioning.

Kellum was later taken to the Trumbull County jail, while the report did not specify any charges against the woman.

Starting at $3.23/week.
