Woman rescued from blaze in Austintown

AUSTINTOWN — A woman suffered serious injuries after a Friday morning fire, the township’s fire chief said.

Chief David Schertzer said his department responded to multiple reports of smoke and flames at 3887 Cannon Road about 9:40 a.m. He said an elderly, disabled woman was quickly removed through her bedroom window and taken immediately by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital and appeared to be in critical condition.

“There was no fire damage to the bedroom, so it was all from smoke inhalation,” he said.

The Mahoning County Auditor’s website shows the 952-square foot single-story home is owned by Evelyn L. Kramer.

Schertzer said the woman lives with her daughter, but she was the only one home when the fire started. He said the daughter had just arrived back at the house after running errands, and was still in her car when she saw smoke coming from a window.

“I believe she started to scream for help and the neighbors got involved, and that is when the calls started coming into our department,” Schertzer said.

He said fire crews arrived at the house within about five minutes and immediately went into rescue mode. While one team entered the home and found the woman in her bedroom, another team outside the house brought a ladder to the bedroom window, and the woman was rescued from the home through the window.

Schertzer said she was out of the house by 9:51 a.m. and Lane LifeTrans paramedics were on scene to administer first aid before she was taken to the hospital. He said she was later transported to a hospital in Akron.

Schertzer said the living room and kitchen area sustained the majority of the fire damage. He said the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire and the point of origin, which both are unclear at this time.

He said firefighters were able to knock down the blaze and clear the scene within two hours, while he remained there with local and state fire investigators until about noon.

“The house is structurally sound, there’s just a lot of smoke and fire damage to the interior,” he said. “We’ve boarded up all the doors and windows where our crews entered.”

Schertzer said Austintown sent two engines and a ladder truck to the home and called for mutual aid from Canfield’s Cardinal Joint Fire District, which also sent an engine.

“We didn’t really end up utilizing them very much, but they were there to help us,” Schertzer said.
