Woman charged in fatal buggy crash
MESOPOTAMIA — A 32-year-old woman from Orwell faces a vehicular homicide charge after her van struck an Amish buggy, resulting in the death of an unborn child, authorities said.
Jessica Scialabba was booked into Trumbull County jail Tuesday following the May 12 crash on state Route 87, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The charge was filed in Newton Falls Municipal Court.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that Scialabba was driving a Chevrolet Express van westbound on SR 87 when it rear-ended the buggy, forcing it off the roadway. The collision occurred in dark, unlit conditions.
A 25-year-old pregnant woman and an 11-month-old boy in the buggy were airlifted to a Cleveland hospital with serious injuries. Police said the unborn child of the pregnant woman died. A 2-year-old boy in the buggy also sustained serious injuries.
Scialabba and the buggy driver were unharmed.
