Commissioners honor centenarians at meeting
22 will be honored again at library program Friday
WARREN — Michael Salcone, 101, sat in the front row of the Trumbull County commissioners meeting on Wednesday as one of 22 centenarians expected to be honored during a special program at the Warren Library on Friday.
Salcone, a World War II veteran, his wife, Trisha, and an aide were congratulated by Commissioners Tony Bernard, Denny Malloy and Rick Hernandez for their longevity and service to the Trumbull community
“Thank you,” Salcone responded when he was asked if he wanted to speak. “I’m glad to be here.”
The commissioners passed a proclamation that will be presented to the 100-year-olds as part of the annual program.
Diane Siskowic-Jurkovic, Trumbull’s senior levy administrator, said the Senior Services Commission has one more 100-year-old being honored this year over the 21 that were honored during a ceremony in 2024.
“We’ve lost seven people who participated in last year’s program,” Siskowic-Jurkovic said. “However, we identified eight others who are at least 100 years old or older.”
The local event was begun in Trumbull County in 2023 by Roberta Cykon. In the first year, there were about a dozen 100-year-olds recognized during a ceremony at the Warren Library.
“The ceremony is part of the Senior Levy’s efforts to serve the needs and recognize the accomplishments of the county’s seniors,” Siskowic-Jurkovic said. “People who are hearing about this are reaching out to the senior services commission about their relatives or themselves.”
Others expected to be recognized include Dorothy M. Thompson Jewell, 108; Evelyn Fisher and Helen Prince, both with April birthdays and each turning 107 this year; Mary Dolores Infante, Jefferson Littell, Ruth Ketzel and Melissa Minor, all 103; Virginia Bass, Mariam A. Hopkins, Vesta McVay and Theresa Montecalvo Verbosky, each 102; Bertha Gatta, Norman Gatta, Robert Horner, Alma May Ward Knupp, Geraldine Neely, Steve Soroka, Eleanor Maraczi and Salcone, who all turned 101; as well as Joseph Perone, Iona Blasko and Joanne Ulery, each of whom turned 100 years old.
