WHAT: Board of education meeting Tuesday and Sept. 17
PRESENT: Kimberly Barrell, Michele Lamb, Chris Chieffo, Mary Ann McMahon and Tony Perrone
The board:
• Approved an agreement with the Youngstown State University Centofanti School of Nursing to allow nursing students to come to Niles schools to work in clinics starting in 2025.
• Accepted the retirement / resignation of Edward Raschilla as physical education head / lead teacher, K-12, effective Sept. 23. Sara McBride, a high school health teacher, was named to the position for one year.
• Hired David Woloschak on a one-year contract as a physical education substitute at the high and middle schools.
• Granted three-year contracts to Raffaela Infante and Amanda Macino, social workers, and John Lamanna, school psychologist, through July 31, 2028.
• Granted a five-year contract to Stephen Rovnak, high school principal, through July 31, 2030.
• Approved transferring Melissa Bickerstaff from educational assistant at the primary school to administrative assistant at the high school.
• Approved a field trip to Camp Fitch for the sixth grade April 2-4; a field trip to Washington, D.C., for seventh- and eighth-graders May 8-10; and the high school choir trip May 2-3 to Pennsylvania to perform at the Flight 93 Memorial and participate in the music in the park showcase and competition.
• Approved a memorandum of understanding with Ohio Association of Public School Employees Local 365 that gives bus drivers who drive five consecutive trips outside of regular work hours a $200 bonus.
• Approved students enrolled in the career-based intervention work program to receive hourly pay for assistant custodian.
• Recognized Niles Primary staff Jamie Duncan, dean of students, and Lindsey Wiseman, educational aide, for performing the Heimlich maneuver on a choking student.
• Established the Gilbert Macali Sr. Family Trust and Mario Gioiello Scholarship Fund scholarships.
