Warren man gets 18 months in prison for trespassing
Jury had acquitted him of robbery, counterfeit charges
WARREN — A Warren man, who earlier this month was acquitted by a Trumbull County jury on charges of robbery and counterfeiting but was convicted of a charge of trespassing into a habitation, was given the maximum 18-month prison sentence Monday.
Darryl Cowan Jr., 40, of Hillsdale Street NW, asked Common Pleas Judge Peter J. Kontos to not consider his past record, which consisted of two prior prison terms, when sentencing him.
“I would like a fair judgment based on this case,” Cowan told the judge. “I have paid my dues on the other things.”
Kontos disagreed.
“I’m sure every defendant would like me to forget their past, but that is not how this works,” Kontos said. “You are a culmination of everything that you have done.”

Assistant Prosecutor Charles Morrow said Cowan did not show remorse after the three-day trial.
In taking the stand in his own defense, Cowan said the night was “a series of unfortunate events” that ended up with him being found in the rear bedroom of a Tod Avenue SW home of a former pastor and his wife. The defendant told jurors he had only two $20 bills on him when he entered the club with three friends who had invited him there for a birthday celebration.
Morrow said the lack of witnesses from the club led to the acquittal, but the testimony at trial showed Cowan had trespassed into the home.
The prosecution called four witnesses, including the wife. Two Warren Township officers testified they had found a shirtless Cowan hiding in the back bedroom of the nearby home on the night of June 19, 2021. Two dancers from That One Place club had accused Cowan of passing off the fake bill and then assaulting a bar patron, but the dancers did not testify at trial.
Public defendant Alexander Keane said he would file an appeal for Cowan. Keane said another attorney, however, will be appointed by the 11th District Court of Appeals to argue the case for the defendant. In the two-day trial, Cowan was accused of passing counterfeit
