Ryan says Capitol police will answer to riot

U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, chairman of the subcommittee that funds the Capitol police, said he is launching an investigation into the agency’s “severe systemic failure in securing the building’s perimeter” and response during a riot by President Donald Trump supporters.

Ryan, D-Howland, called the situation “extremely frustrating” and said that he is “livid” about the riot.

Ryan said he was given “assurances” from the Capitol police and the congressional sergeant at arms “that no one would be close to the Capitol” when the electoral vote debate occurred Wednesday.

“We’re going to dig deep and find out what happened,” he said, adding: “Why weren’t there proper reinforcements” when the rioters entered the Capitol?

Ryan is chairman of the House Appropriations’ Legislative Branch Subcommittee. Among the subcommittee’s jurisdictions is the Capitol police. The police receive $516 million in funding approved by the committee.

“We’ve got to completely reevaluate the Capitol police,” he said.
