Former YSU football player killed in car crash

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown police are investigating a fatal crash late Saturday that killed a former Youngstown State University football player.

Reports indicate the accident happened at 11:54 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Albert Street and McGuffey Road.

Police were attempting to stop a 19-year-old driver for a traffic violation near the intersection of Albert Street and the Himrod Expressway exit when that driver attempted to evade police and then struck another vehicle on Albert Street.

The driver of the other vehicle was identified as 24-year-old Darius Shackleford, who was a member of the YSU Penguins football program from 2015-2020

Shackleford was pronounced dead at the scene, reports state.

Reports indicate the 19-year-old driving the evading vehicle involved in the crash was not hurt. A second passenger with the 19-year old was a 17-year-old boy.
