McDonald police host car show

The Niles Times MCDONALD — An annual car show held each summer in Woodland Park by the McDonald Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 194 brings in funds to benefit local community groups and organizations. The 23rd annual Thunder in the Park is set 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Woodland Park off Ohio Avenue. Rain date is Sept. 10. Registration is 2 to 5 p.m., judging is 5 to 7 p.m. and the award ceremony is at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and will include deejay Crazy Dave, goodie bags, dash plaques, a 50-50 raffle, door prizes and FOP tee-shirts. Douglas C. Darnall 1942-2017

MINERAL RIDGE — Douglas C. Darnall, 74, died Wednesday evening, July 19, 2017, at his home. Doug was born Dec. 12, 1942, in Los Angeles, the son of Ira and Jeanette Darnall. He was the CEO of PsyCare for 27 years. Doug is survived by his wife, Jan Fredrick Darnall; daughters, Brianna Herzing of Pittsburgh and Lindsey McMahan of Columbus; two grandchildren; and his brother, Dick Darnall of North Carolina. Lane Funeral Home, Mineral Ridge Chapel, handled the arrangements.

Heritage Day set Aug. 5 in Niles

NILES — The Niles Heritage Day is being planned noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Ward Thomas House grounds, 503 Brown St. The theme will be “Remembering our Past, Living in the Present, Embracing our Future.” The day will feature displays and demonstrations by local crafters, vendors and artisans, including the Dragon Guild. There will be food, raffles, face painting, children’s games and activities. Local artist Rick Muccio will be drawing caricatures. Historical books and items will be available for view and purchase as well as tours of the Ward Thomas House.

Ronald L. Ankney 1942-2017

GIRARD — Ronald Lee Ankney, 74, died Saturday, July 15, 2017. Ron was born July 18, 1942, in Latrobe, Pa., a son of Curtis Gregg Ankney and Mary Jane Ankney. Ron worked at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. He served in the U.S. Air Force. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Senffner Ankney; one son, David Lee Ankney of Girard; and a sister, Tammy Peterman of Stoystown, Pa. Arrangements were handled by the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home, Inc., in Youngstown.

Kids to compete in Spartan Challenge

MCDONALD — The Spartan Challenge will be held Aug. 10 in Woodland Park with Olympic style events for children up to age 14. Registration is 10:30 a.m. and start time is 11 a.m. Early registration can be completed at the municipal building by Aug. 3.

Shirley Porter 1931-2017

MINERAL RIDGE — Shirley Porter, 85, died Sunday, July 16, 2017, at home. Shirley was born Dec. 8, 1931, to Neil and Mildred Erickson. Shirley is survived by her daughters, Genny Garcia, with whom she resided, Jackie Gregory and Vicki Mottice; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas “Whitey” Porter; her son, Michael Porter; and a great-grandson. Lane Funeral Home, Roberts-Clark Chapel, handled the arrangements.
