NILES — The students who will be Niles McKinley High School seniors this year were in kindergarten the last time the school district passed a new operating levy, School Superintendent Ann Marie Thigpen said during Thursday’s levy committee and Board of Education meeting. McDONALD — Village officials have decided to close the park’s basketball courts indefinitely after a series of problems in recent weeks, including littering and drug paraphernalia being found at the courts. Mayor Glen Puckett said at the Aug. 9 council meeting the courts, which are surrounded by fencing, are now locked. ‘‘This is being done until we can find a solution to the problems that have been occurring there,’’ he said. MCDONALD — Members of a local contractors union donated their time and service to improve the village ballfields, which are used by the McDonald High School baseball teams. Will Lewis, president of the Youngstown Chapter of the Ohio Contractors Association, said the association wanted to do a community service project and wanted to help at the fields by putting in stormwater piping for better drainage to eliminate water problems. NILES — The Journey of Hope bicycling team made a visit to Fairhaven School in Niles Aug. 8 as part of their effort to raise awareness and encourage inclusion for individuals with developmental disabilities.
