GOP looks to liven up race in 1st Ward

NILES — The Trumbull County GOP is looking for a candidate to run in the 1st Ward in Niles after questionable social media posts from the unopposed Democratic candidate surfaced. Some posts from political newcomer Patrick “PJ” Kearney II contain strong, sometimes violent and sometimes sexualized language. Kearney, who won the ward’s Democratic primary in May, said the snippets of posts have largely been taken out of context or refer to personal, inside jokes and conversations. TNT vets gather for anniversary

NILES — David Brown made his stage debut at age 4 in “The Seven Year Itch,” the very first production Trumbull New Theatre staged at its theater in Niles in 1957. He only had one line but, “I discovered I liked applause,” Brown said. He ended up leading the audience in its applause, which didn’t go over well with director and TNT cofounder Frances Pendleton. “I got a director’s note from Frances Pendleton via my mother that I better not do that again,” he said. Talk on KKK set at McKinley museum

NILES — “A History of the Ku Klux Klan in Niles, Ohio” will be presented at 1 p.m. Saturday at the McKinley Memorial Auditorium, 40 N. Main St. The lecture will be presented by Sandra Bilovesky and Ralph Tolbert of the Niles Historical Society. The talk is part of the 100th anniversary celebration of the museum. Valsi Cleaners to close Aug. 31

NILES — Valsi Cleaners in Niles will close its doors Aug. 31 after more than 70 years in the community. Pickup of items only will be held 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday until the final day.

Niles man gets two years in break-in

WARREN — A Niles man received a two-year prison sentence Aug. 17 after he was convicted of a felony linked to an April break-in at a Howland home. Carmen J. Renna, 27, 404 W. Federal St., pleaded guilty before Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Ronald J. Rice to a second-degree burglary charge. Renna told Rice he has been battling a 15-year heroin habit. Assistant Trumbull County Prosecutor Michael Burnett said Renna was accused of taking personal items from the home on North River Road. Burnett said no restitution was requested by the victim.
