Niles board of education seeks 9.25-mill levy

NILES — The Niles Board of Education is asking voters to shell out a significant increase — more than $300 annually — in their property taxes to support the school system with a 10-year, 9.25-mill operating levy on the Nov. 7 ballot. NILES — After more than a decade of temporary moratoriums, City Council has passed legislation specifying where sexually oriented businesses are allowed to operate in Niles. The ordinance approved Oct. 4 as an emergency measure establishes parameters as to where adult bookstores, novelty stores, theaters and cabarets are allowed to operate within city limits. McDONALD — Village Council members are questioning whether raises for police officers are necessary. No official action was taken, but the idea was floated during a recent committee meeting. There are five full-time officers, according to acting police Chief Bill Woodley, and one part-time officer. McKinley library director in line for new post

YOUNGSTOWN — The director of the McKinley Memorial Library in Niles is a finalist in the search for the next executive director of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. Michelle Alleman is among four finalists named after recent interviews.
