Fairhaven artists celebrated

NILES — More than 50 artists were celebrated at Fairhaven Foundation’s 19th annual Calendar Art Show Nov. 1 at Ciminero’s Banquet Center. Artwork from 13 of those were chosen to be displayed in the foundation’s 2018 calendar, said Linda Tiihonen, director of Fairhaven Foundation. Other artists received honorable mention and a medal. “We’re here to celebrate abilities, artistic abilities,” Tiihonen said. Communities get $1M for home repairs

A consortium of Niles, Girard and Hubbard will receive $1 million to give to local homeowners for home repairs in 2018. To be eligible for the Community Housing Improvement and Preservation Program, residents must own and occupy their home, and meet income eligibility requirements set by the state. Homeowners accepted into the program can receive a new furnace, electrical upgrades, roof repairs and more. Applications are being accepted at Neighborhood Development Services, on a first come, first serve basis. Interested homeowners can call 330-297-6400, Ext. 248.

McDonald council OKs 2018 budget

McDONALD — Village Council approved the 2018 budget last week during its regular meeting. Mayor Glen Puckett said the approximately $3 million budget had no major changes from the previous year and all departments are within budget with no deficit spending. “We are keeping with the status quo this year,” he said. Puckett added that the village will seek grants through the Eastgate Regional Council of Governments to repave Parkside Place in 2018.

Twenty Under 20 tickets available

WARREN — Tickets are available for the dinner to honor the 2017 Class of Twenty Under 20. The program, now in its fifth year, recognizes 20 high-achieving local individuals younger than 20 for their leadership skills through volunteerism, extracurricular activities and academic achievements. 60 learn about Niles history during cemetery tour

NILES — Laid to rest in Niles Union Cemetery are many of the lives lost in the Civil War, World War I and World War II, as well as the city’s earliest leaders and their families. Their stories were brought to life Saturday with a tour by local historian Wendell Lauth. NILES — Two candidates will face off in November to replace Niles Municipal Court Judge Thomas Townley, who will retire at the end of the year. Democrat Chris Shaker, 59, and independent Kara Stanford, 35, both Niles attorneys, are seeking the seat.
