McKinley sits for a portrait with Swiss artist

Editor’s note: This is part of a weekly series marking the 120th anniversary of Niles native William McKinley’s U.S. presidency. In the fall of 1897, President William McKinley took time out of his busy schedule to have his portrait painted. This idea did not originate with him, but with Vice President Garret Hobart, who had his done in 1896 by young Swiss artist August Benziger. Benziger was born in 1867 and studied art in Europe. Young Niles students get free meals

NILES — For the first time in its history, the Niles City School District is providing free breakfasts and lunches to every student in kindergarten to fifth grade at the Niles Primary and Niles Intermediate school buildings. Holly Hanni, food service director for Niles schools and a contracted provider with the Nutrition Group, said the new free meals option started in August as part of the Community Eligibility Provision through the National School Lunch Program that allows students to have free meals without having to pay a fee or submit an application. ‘‘I applied last year ...

Billing office faces criticism

NILES — Even as the city struggled through fiscal emergency over the last three years, the former administration and service directors handed out discounts on utility bills, the service director said. “I don’t know if it was an administrative oversight. I don’t know if it’s incompetence. I don’t know what it is. But what I do know is the comedy of errors in that office is nauseating,” said Robert Marino, city council president. Former McMenamy’s owner gets probation

WARREN — The owner of a former banquet facility in Niles received two years’ probation Sept. 18 on a misdemeanor conviction of attempted workers’ compensation fraud. Robert Leonard, 68, of Cynthia Court, Niles, appeared before Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Peter J. Kontos, who also suspended a 180-day jail sentence, which he said will be enforced if Leonard doesn’t fulfill the orders of his probation. Leonard also was ordered to pay court costs.
