NL bests AL in 1st swing-off to win 95th All-Star Game
The 95th edition of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game resulted in history in Atlanta.
The American League battled back from a 6-0 hole in the final innings to force a swing-off to determine the winner. It was the first time a swing-off was needed to decide the winner of the “Mid-Summer Classic.”
The National League bats got things going early when Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks drove in a pair with a double down the right-field line in the bottom of the first inning against American League starting pitcher Tarik Skubel.
A pair of home runs looked to break the game open in the bottom of the sixth. New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonzo hit a three-run home run and Arizona’s Corbin Carroll added a solo shot to put the National League ahead 6-0.
Athletics’ designated hitter Brent Rooker got the AL on the board with a three-run blast of his own in the top of the seventh, and Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. made it a 6-4 game later in the frame with an RBI groundout.
The AL completed the regulation comeback when Witt drove in a run with an RBI double into the right-field corner. Then Cleveland Guardians left fielder Steven Kwan tied the game at 6 with two outs in the ninth when he beat out an infield single, scoring Witt from third base.
Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber hit three home runs in the swing-off to put the NL ahead.
The American League’s last chance was Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Jonathan Aranda. But his best shot at tying the deciding round bounced off the brick facing above the outfield padding along the right-field wall.
Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes got the start for the National League. He retired the side in order to begin the game.
