BROOKFIELD — Brookfield High School’s gym was nearly filled on Wednesday, as a mix of high school and younger students packed into almost every inch of the bleachers.
The environment provided energy for a noon opening tip, and the Brookfield boys basketball team fed off it.
The Warriors flew around the court, jumping passing lanes, fighting for rebounds and sinking shots. They treated the students to a show, winning their third straight by beating Champion 75-39.
“You make one then you’re getting a little energy. You forget you’re tired here and there and you settle in,” Brookfield head coach Shawn Hammond said of the environment. “They got energy down a little bit, made some shots, executed on offense, played really hard on defense. I thought (we) played really hard on defense.”
The Golden Flashes started off well enough. Their first three made baskets were threes, and they held a 9-8 lead through the first several minutes. But the Warriors (11-5, 8-3 Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Grey Tier) outscored Champion 10-2 to end the first quarter and take an 18-11 lead into the second.
Brookfield’s battery of buckets continued. They scored 11 points in the first three minutes of the second. Eight minutes of play later, the Warriors walked into the locker room with a 36-21 lead.
“Once we settled in, getting into our rotation, the guys started playing,” Hammond said.
Brody Smith gave the home crowd some life early in the third. After a steal, Smith dunked the ball — his first of two dunks on the day — on the Warriors’ first possession to open the second-half scoring.
“I definitely needed to dunk a couple,” Smith said. “I missed a couple the last couple games, but it felt great to just show out for the school.”
The Golden Flashes (4-15, 2-10 MVAC Grey) started getting some shots to fall, with Braylen Braham leading the offense. He scored nine of Champion’s 14 points in the third, but Brookfield still took a 58-35 lead into the fourth and were never threatened.
“Braylen Braham is like ‘Mister Ironman.’ Hardnosed player,” Champion head coach Mark Taylor said. “Love the way he plays … gritty, tough. He does everything for us. Need him in the post, he can play in the post. He can play the wing. Leads us in rebounds, he’s our best defender. He does it all.”
Brookfield’s Rob Flynn led all scorers with 14 points. Judah DeJoy finished with 11, while Teagan Barbe added nine and Smith ended with eight.
Braham scored 16 points to lead the Flashes, and Zack Morris chipped in nine points.
“We competed. I thought we fought hard,” Taylor said. “We had some breakdowns, but so what? We’re going to keep working, difficult environment — I thought it was a great atmosphere.
“We gotta take care of the ball better. We need to defend and rebound together, rebound a little bit better. But I thought we worked hard and competed.”
After the game, the Brookfield players returned to the gym to meet with the middle school students. They signed autographs for the kids and took a photo with the fifth graders.
“(The middle school students) never get to see a game, so it’s awesome for the school,” Hammond said. “It’s different out here too. It’s tough for us because we played last night. We knew the young kids and students would give us some energy, so we were pretty happy about that.”
