Jury unable to reach verdict

Deliberations continue today in stabbing trial

WARREN — The jury in the Kenyon D. Kellum attempted murder trial went home Wednesday afternoon after deliberating the whole day without reaching a verdict in the case. The jury will return today to resume deliberations.

Closing arguments in the case were given late Tuesday before Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Sarah Thomas Kovoor. Afterwards, the jury began deliberations but only for a short time before going home. The jury has deliberated about seven hours so far.

Kellum, 52, of Warren, and the Oakland, Calif., area is accused of stabbing a 37-year-old man on the sidewalk near the front of the Subway restaurant on U.S. Route 422 in Niles in the Gentry Plaza near the state Route 46 intersection.

During testimony Tuesday, the victim’s father testified that he believes his son, who is originally from the Pittsburgh area, was living in the Niles area for alcohol rehab and was “looking for work at an Italian restaurant.”

The doctor who performed emergency surgery on the man at St. Joseph Warren Hospital testified that the victim died from cardiac arrest caused by the stab wound he suffered to his neck and shoulder area, but he was able to revive him.

His father testified that his son is at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in a program that focuses on brain injuries and helping them reestablish a “connection to the next level of perception of what is going on and connecting with people.” He said his son is “profoundly disabled” and cannot communicate.

Kellum said he had been in the Warren area visiting family for the two to three months before the stabbing and was with his girlfriend from the Warren area when he and the victim came into conflict.

Cellphone video of the confrontation played a central role in the trial, including when Kellum testified as the final witness in the trial Tuesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Kellum’s girlfriend, Zulekha M. Berry, 46, of Clearwater Street NW in Warren, also known as Zulekha Williamson, had a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Niles Municipal Court on charges of attempted murder and complicity to felonious assault for her part in the stabbing.

Testimony was given during the hearing, and Judge Christopher Shaker found probable cause that Berry committed the offenses and bound the charges over to a grand jury.

She was arraigned on the charges Friday. The charges were filed against her Nov. 10. She was arrested a short time before her arraignment by the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force.
