Warren hospital workers deserve all of our thanks

DEAR EDITOR: Yesterday was a better day in the ER at good old Warren General, aka St Joe’s, now Mercy Health. That is, according to the kind nurse, who admitted she was working four 14-hour shifts. Even as I walked into the lobby, the receptionist smiled. I’ve had family in this hospital recently. Now, firsthand, I’d like to give a huge shoutout to the entire staff, nurses, labs, housekeeping, dietitians, residents and every other technician I’ve forgotten. They’re amazingly upbeat and I’ve been in grocery retail since forever. I showed up through COVID and wore the ...

Help to preserve the history of Social Security

DEAR EDITOR: Donald Trump doesn’t believe in Social Security nor care about what it means to millions of Americans. He showed that when he had Elon Musk spending 2025 taking a figurative wrecking ball to the Social Security Administration. He’d destroy it if he could. So, it’s no wonder he wants to erase its history. The Wilbur Cohen Federal Building was built to be the Social Security Administration’s headquarters and was filled with art to inspire all who entered it. The most famous piece, “The Meaning of Social Security,” depicts the program’s many benefits, ...

Dave Joyce knew just what to do with Niki Frenchko

DEAR EDITOR: Dave Joyce knew what an unstable nutjob Niki Frenchko is all along. He knew all he had to do was “butt hurt” her a little and she’d go off the deep end, and she has! Well played, Dave Joyce! Now this God-fearing, blasphemous “Christian” can show everyone what a psycho she is with her “porn.” If you think for one minute God will honor your campaign tactics, you are sicker than I thought! ROBERT PLANT Warren

Furor over voter ID is much ado about nothing

DEAR EDITOR: What is wrong with Democrats? Anyone who moves to a different city, county, state or district — not just veterans — has to register to vote with ID. If you lose any personal documents, you CAN get new ones. What is the big deal when you get married, you get a card from the courthouse with your married name on it, I did. As for people of color, it is no different. When you see a doctor, register into a hospital, license plates, stickers for a car, a new driver’s license, proof of car insurance, rent a car, rent an apartment, get subsidized housing, or apply for ...

Enough with the selective outrage on gasoline prices

DEAR EDITOR: For the past weeks, the price of gasoline has had the liberals clutching in terror at their pearls. Oh, the humanity! I keep an account of my daily activities in calendars — my appointments, snowfall amounts, when I plant flowers, when I pick my first tomatoes, do a bit of baking and when I buy gas. I save my old calendars. I can look back and see what happened years ago. I looked back and saw the price of gas during Joe Biden’s flawed tenure in the Oval Office. On May 20, 2024, it was $3.99/gallon; on Jan. 26, 2023, $3.99/gallon; on May 27, 2022, $4.90/gallon; ...

Treating U.S. allies as losers is bad strategy

DEAR EDITOR: Back when presidents had advisers who were expected to give them advice rather than massage their egos by telling them what they wanted to hear, Gen. Colin Powell warned George W. Bush about the dangers of invading Middle Eastern countries by quoting the Pottery Barn rule. “You break it, you own it.” Twenty-four years later, no one around President Trump would have had the temerity to remind him of the rule. But it wouldn’t have mattered, because Trump has rewritten it to suit himself: I break it, you own it. Unlike other presidents, Trump did not consult with ...
