Help to preserve the history of Social Security

DEAR EDITOR:

Donald Trump doesn’t believe in Social Security nor care about what it means to millions of Americans.

He showed that when he had Elon Musk spending 2025 taking a figurative wrecking ball to the Social Security Administration.

He’d destroy it if he could. So, it’s no wonder he wants to erase its history.

The Wilbur Cohen Federal Building was built to be the Social Security Administration’s headquarters and was filled with art to inspire all who entered it.

The most famous piece, “The Meaning of Social Security,” depicts the program’s many benefits, is one of many multi-panel frescoes painted directly onto the building’s walls. This is more than a building. This is a statement of the principle that Americans have for one another.

That’s the principle that the Trump administration wants to destroy.

That’s why a campaign called the “Save the Wilbur J. Cohen Federal Building — the “Sistine Chapel of New Deal Art” was launched by The Living New Deal Project asking federal agencies and Congress to ensure that the Cohen Building is protected for future generations.

Please ask your members of Congress to help preserve Social Security’s history by supporting these efforts.
