Colorectal cancer screenings can save lives

DEAR EDITOR:

Colorectal cancer remains one of the deadliest cancers in the United States, yet it is highly preventable and treatable when detected early.

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 153,000 Americans will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer this year, and over 52,000 will lose their lives. When men and women are combined, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death nationwide. Alarmingly, it is now the leading cause of cancer death among adults under age 50.

Colorectal cancer often develops silently. Many individuals feel completely well, which leads to delayed screening. However, regular screening can identify and remove precancerous polyps before they turn into cancer.

Risk factors such as diabetes, smoking, heavy alcohol use, obesity and diets high in processed red meats and low in fruits and vegetables increase the likelihood of developing this disease. These risk factors are prevalent in many of our communities, making awareness and prevention even more important.

The American Cancer Society recommends routine screening beginning at age 45 for individuals at average risk, with earlier screening for those with family history or additional risk factors.

Screening options include colonoscopy and at-home stool-based tests — both of which are effective.

Beyond screening, prevention also includes making informed lifestyle choices. Maintaining a healthy weight, increasing physical activity, limiting alcohol use, avoiding tobacco, and choosing a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can significantly reduce colorectal cancer risk. Small, consistent changes today can lower cancer risk tomorrow.

This March, during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, I encourage everyone to speak with their healthcare provider about screening. If you are overdue, take action. Early detection saves lives.

At ONE Health Ohio, every day we are committed to improving screening rates and reducing colorectal cancer deaths through education, outreach, and preventive care.

Prevention is powerful. Screening works!
