A return to 1958 author’s ‘The Ugly American’
DEAR EDITOR:
In 1958, the political novel, “The Ugly American,” was released, authored by William Lederer, captain in the US Navy, and Eugene Burdick, political scientist.
One reviewer indicated that this very popular novel dealt with officials and Americans abroad who were “ignorant of local customs, social norms, and cheerfully insensitive” to the citizens of another nation.
Allegedly, a 2026 mini-docu-series of this political novel, a sad sequel one might say, is coming out …. like Yogi Berra observed, “Deja vu all over again.”
The title is yet to be determined. The candidates are:
1. “Greenland is My Land!”
2. “A Duffer on the Greens of Gaza.”
3. “Hey Pal, Give Me That Panama Canal.”
4. “See Ya’ in Venezuela!”
5. “Canada and Chocolate Cake…I Can Hardly Wait.”
6. “Cuba…We Are Going to do it to Ya’.”
7. “Iran…Do You Want to be Gone?”
8. “I Want to Eat My Taco in Mexico.”
9. “Have a “Tariffic Day!”
10. “Can Kim, and Chi, and Vlady Come Out to Play?”
Watch for the grand opening!
The “Ugly American” is back …
