Colbert wasn’t funny and neither is Trump
DEAR EDITOR:
“Here’s Johnny!”
Regarding the July 26 column “Canceling Colbert: How late-night TV lost its way.” Losing $40 million every year because people figured out “The Late Show” is no longer funny.
Something funny just came to me — I came to that exact conclusion the very first time I saw it.
The editor’s article takes us back to the era of Johnny Carson, spanning 30 years from Oct. 1, 1962, to May 22, 1992. Seven presidents served under his humor starting with John F. Kennedy (Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Raegan and George H.W. Bush).
It wasn’t all smooth sailing under each president, they had their highs and lows. But somehow, at the end, we felt everything would be OK.
I cannot honestly say that today under our present president. We have no idea what tomorrow shall be.
It is total drama, drama, drama. Ruminating on “Here’s Johnny,” the movie “The Shining” comes to mind, with Jack Nicholson’s head poking through the door.
I feel the cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show” on CBS is the same as the feelings I have of our current president; but he shouldn’t have expressed it on every show.
