Candidates to meet in Fox News Town Hall

Democrat Tim Ryan and Republican J.D. Vance will participate Nov. 1 in a Fox News town hall, but the two U.S. Senate candidates won’t be face to face.

Instead, one candidate will field questions from the moderators and a live audience of Ohio voters — consisting of both Democrats and Republicans — in Columbus and then the other will do the same.

The one-hour event will begin at 6 p.m. and air on Fox News. It comes exactly a week before the Nov. 8 election though early voting started two weeks ago.

The moderators are Bret Baier, the channel’s chief political anchor and host of Special Report; and Martha MacCallum, anchor and executive editor of The Story with Martha MacCallum.

Ryan, a 10-term U.S. House member from the Warren area, and Vance of Cincinnati, a venture capitalist and author of “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis,” have debated twice, on Oct. 17 in Cleveland and Oct. 24 at Youngstown’s Stambaugh Auditorium.

“Tim is going everywhere and talking to everyone, and that’s why we’ll win this race,” said Izzi Levy, Ryan’s campaign spokeswoman.

Vance’s campaign declined to comment on the town hall except to say it had no details beyond what Fox News provided.

Fox News has been the highest-rated network on basic cable for the last six years.

Most polls show a statistical tie between the two candidates, including two released Monday.

A Marist College poll shows Vance ahead of Ryan 46 percent to 45 percent among 1,141 registered voters with a 3.9 percent plus or minus margin of error. The poll was conducted Oct. 17 to last Thursday. A Marist College poll taken last month had the same results.

A Spectrum News / Siena College poll has the two tied at 46 percent each among 644 likely voters. The poll, with a 5.1 percent plus or minus margin of error, was conducted Oct. 14 to last Wednesday. A Spectrum / Siena poll taken last month had Ryan ahead 46 percent to 43 percent for Vance and within the 4.4 percent margin of error.

Starting at $3.23/week.
