James L. Winger 1940-2025

HOWLAND — James Leo Winger, 84, passed away Sunday, June 29, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Jim was born Dec. 16, 1940, in Sharon, Pa., a son of George Leo and Irene Richards Winger.

He was a 1958 graduate of Sharon High School, Sharon, Pa., and earned a bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University. Jim retired as a component engineer at Packard Electric / Delphi after 41 ½ years. During his long engineering career, he was awarded five patents for component designs. While at Packard, Jim also enjoyed playing in company golf and bowling leagues.

Jim was a member / volunteer in many clubs and organization, including the Warren Photographic Society, where he also volunteered to photograph athletes during the local Special Olympic games; also he was a member / volunteer of the Trumbull Art Gallery, Relay for Life, Vienna Fish & Game Club, and Mosquito Lake Power Squadron, where he served as an officer and instructor.

He treasured time with family and friends, as well as engaging in many hobbies such tennis, fishing, hunting, boating on Lake Erie and photography. While in retirement, he especially enjoyed traveling and embarked on several cruises with his wife of 62 years, Jean.

Jim is survived by his wife, Jean Kahl Winger, whom he married June 28, 1963; two daughters, Kim (Greg) DePietro of Canton and Amanda (Kris) Stabley of Ball Ground, Georgia; three grandchildren, Lauren (Kyle) Weslosky of Troy, Michigan, Sarah (Christpher) Harris of Green and Hunter Stabley of Delaware, Ohio; two great-grandchildren, Emma and Leo; a sister, Lani (Tim) Wood of Bay Village; a brother, Mark Winger of Weedsport, New York; in-laws, MaryAnn (Dave) Groutt of Freedom, Pa., Joan Fischer of Streetsboro and Joe (Judy) Kahl of Mars, Pa.; along with several nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Edward Fischer; and sisters-in-law, Nancy Sed and Susan Winger.

Family and friends may pay their respects 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2025, at Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel, 1884 North Road NE, Warren.

A visitation from 10 to 10:50 a.m., with a funeral Mass to follow, will take place Monday, July 7, 2025, at St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish-Blessed Sacrament Church, 3020 Reeves Road, Warren.
