Charles H. Hughes Jr. 1942-2025

CLEVELAND — Charles H. Hughes Jr. passed away Thursday, July 10, 2025, at the age of 82.

“Sonny,” as he was affectionately known, was born on Oct. 21, 1942, in Steubenville. His family later moved to Warren, where he would spend the next several decades living, working and raising a family.

After high school, Sonny served his country with honor as a member of the 24th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army.

He spent most of his career as a long-haul truck driver, often bringing home small trinkets from far-off places (like Texas) to share with his loved ones.

Sonny was thoughtful, generous and had a quiet strength about him. An excellent golfer, he also enjoyed puzzles, coffee with friends and a good fish fry at the Chat-N-Chew. He liked his chili spicy, his clothes pressed and was rarely seen without his signature baseball hat.

A proud veteran and a man of deep faith, Sonny never shied away from standing up for what he believed in. He spent his final years at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, where he served as a floor sergeant and faithfully tended the rose garden — a quiet labor of love that reflected his enduring sense of duty and care.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Hughes; his mother and stepfather, Zella and Zigmont Fudaley; his brother, Timothy; and his son, Christopher.

He is survived and deeply missed by his sons, Jason and Steven Hughes; his sisters, Catherine Wirick and Shirley Masluk; four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; his many friends at the Ohio Veterans Home; and his loyal pup, Maggie.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of services at 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 18, 2025, at the Ohio Veterans Home, 3416 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, OH 44870. Chaplain Randy Barlow will officiate, with internment following in the Ohio Veterans Home Cemetery.

Pfeil Funeral Home, Sandusky Chapel, 617 Columbus Ave., Sandusky has been entrusted with arrangements.

Condolences may be shared with the family at pfeilfuneralhome.com.
