Valentine exhibit open at Sutliff Museum

WARREN — The Sutliff Museum recently opened a new exhibit, “Messages from Cupid: Vintage Valentines from 1840-1930.” It features valentines from the United States, England and Germany throughout 1840 to 1930. The museum, operated by The Warren Library Association, is located on the second floor of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave., Warren, and is free and fully handicapped accessible. NILES — Wanting to return to the area, the Rev. Chris Stark, a Mineral Ridge native, was able to come back home when he was hired recently as the new minister at Niles First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Stark, who started at the church New Year’s Day, said he graduated from Mineral Ridge High School and then received his bachelor’s degree at Bethany College in West Virginia and then his master’s in divinity / theology from Lexington Theological Seminary. ‘‘I never thought I would end up back in this area,’’ he said. Automatic flushers are doing the trick

NILES — A more permanent fix for orange and brown water in some city neighborhoods seems to be doing the trick. Joe Lewis of Difford Drive said the permanent automatic flusher designed to keep water circulating at his dead end road is better than the temporary fix, which was a fire hose connected to a fire hydrant running constantly and flooding his yard and the street. Since the permanent flusher was installed last week, Lewis said he hasn’t seen any orange water, but he is monitoring his water filter for discoloration. Hiring policy under review

NILES — City Council plans to adopt a more specific hiring policy for the administration to follow in the future after questions surfaced about how a meter reader was hired earlier this month. Council President Robert Marino asked Councilman Barry Steffey Jr., D-4th Ward, and Law Director J. Terrence Dull to investigate if a hiring policy Mayor Tom Scarnecchia enacted in August was violated when a meter reader was hired Jan. 3 despite on online post advertising applications for the job would be accepted through Jan. 6. Niles BOE addressing district busing issues

NILES — The school board is moving on a plan for next year to improve the efficiency of bus routes after learning of concerns that students sometimes are brought to school and delivered home late and drivers have routes for all four of the district’s buildings. The board Thursday heard from Pete Japiske, deputy director of management services for the Ohio School Boards Association, who conducted a study for the district on busing students at four buildings that start and end each day 15 to 20 minutes apart.
