Local seniors earn Tripodi scholarship

NILES — Two Niles McKinley High School seniors recently received the Louis J. Tripodi Scholarship. Selected by the Tripodi family were Trasa Rossi and Kyra Wilson. The scholarship is awarded each year based on applications and letters submitted by McKinley students. The winners receive $5,000 per year for four years, for a total of $20,000 each. Revised fiscal plan gets second reading

NILES — A revised version of the plan to pull Niles out of its massive debt uses city dollars to repair roads, not a fee that would have been placed on motorists. The sixth recovery plan from Mayor Tom Scarnecchia that was given second reading by council Monday would allocate $50,000 from the general fund and $50,000 from the street fund for a street resurfacing program. “Our hope is that the sixth version will be passed (Tuesday) through city council, then through the (fiscal) planning commission in April,” Service Director Edward Stredney said. Libary book sale set for this weekend

NILES — The Friends of the McKinley Memorial Library will host a book sale 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday in the library auditorium. The book sale includes a wide selection of novels, audiobooks, movies and music for all ages. A special preview for the members of the Friends of the McKinley Memorial Library will be 5 to 7 p.m. today.

SCOPE offers Lunch and Learn program

NILES — The Niles SCOPE Senior Center, 14 E. State St., will host a free Lunch and Learn program 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday with speaker Robert Fleischer of Krause Optical. The topic will be “eye care.” Preregistration is required. The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the center.
