Tayala hopes to make comeback

NILES — Matthias Tayala sees the progress his athletes are making — looking down on McDonald High School from a throwing circle. It’s the same one on which the Blue Devils and Kent State standout honed his skills. Tayala is an active onlooker these days, giving his advice or an occasional throw of the discus and shot put. Tayala thought about his specialized event in which he thrived in that concrete home — the hammer throw — the weighted metallic ball attached to a chain, and how his tight, circular motion whipped this implement far from its starting point. Plans for the not-for-profit would be to meet twice a month and hold bingo, ...

Dunlap hopes to make 2018 Winter Olympics

Miles Dunlap desperately wanted his 400-meter hurdle career to continue and thrive. The 2011 McDonald High School graduate wasn’t running fast enough to run the 400 hurdles and make the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials. Dunlap, a former Kent State University and McDonald High School track standout, got word a bobsled combine was in Geneva at the SPIRE Institute and he should attend because of his speed and acceleration, key attributes to this Winter Olympic event. That was the summer of 2016. His score was high enough to receive an invite to a rookie camp in Lake Placid ...

AT THE MOVIES

Currently playing ALIEN: COVENANT: B- Ridley Scott’s latest “Alien” tale is a hybrid, part gory scare fest like the original, part chilly existential tale in the vein of “Prometheus.” Michael Fassbender in a dual role is one of the movie’s aces, but there’s a genuine sense of deja vu, which is made worse by the many “Alien” rip-offs that now adorn the galaxy. What was once a slithery straightforward monster movies in spaces has mutated into an impressively ambitious but overly ornate saga. (Rated R for sci-fi violence, bloody images, language and some sexuality / ...
